Vernier Tour
SOS members enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of the Vernier facilities located in Beaverton, OR. Dave Vernier led the members on a journey through time as he shared the story of the early days of Vernier Technology and how it has become the company that it is today. The tour concluded with Dave Vernier presenting the group with a generous donation to support the continued efforts of the SOS team!
Our sincere thanks and appreciation to Dave and Christine Vernier for their support! |

Beaverton High School
December 11th and December 12th, 2012 SOS members Nick, Katherine, Elizabeth, Jay and Justin headed west to talk with four groups of high school chemistry students at Beaverton High School over two mornings. Fun chemistry demonstrations included "elephant tooth-paste", luminous luminol, chemical reactions that cause colorful (and cyclic) changes, balloons and liquid nitrogen, exploding bubbling methanol, dye-sensitive solar-cells, and many others. The SOS members also shared their own research interests as well as what has inspired their pursuit of science. The students provided excellent questions and were a great audience. |

AKA Science at Floyd Light Middle School
December 11th, 2012 Justin, Elizabeth, Jay, Misty, Grace, and Elliot worked with about ten middle school students enrolled in an after school science course, AKA Science. The theme of the course for the middle school students students this section has been Sound and Flight. The SOS group focused on flight, and in particular flight using buoyancy. For half of the class, they provided a little history of flight using buoyancy, from the 1783 first launch of a hot-air balloon with a human cargo to 2012's sound-barrier breaking jump from a hot-air balloon. They also showed multiple fun demonstrations on buoyancy, pressure, density, and volume. The last half of the evening class was devoted to having the students build their own hot-air lantern using straws, garbage bags, and other easily accessible materials. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate for a successful launch, but the unsuccessful launches were entertaining. |

Wilson High School
December 5th, 2012 Mina, Elizabeth, Cody, and Justin went to Mina's alma mater, Wilson High School, to present a collection of demonstrations and videos meant to inspire the high school students into pursuing science related careers. Elizabeth and Mina showed the thirsty cup demo and even managed not to pour water or soda on anyone's head! Cody crushed the water jug demo. Mina presented videos showing dancing ethanol set to a hip-hop beat, and time-lapse photography of the wonders of nature. Justin showed a short segment on the footage they captured at the OHSU motion capture laboratory on the physics of ballet. |

The Physics of Ballet at OMSI Science Pub
October 16th, 2012 Science Outreach Society returned to where it started at an OMSI Science in the Pub. To present, "The Physics of Ballet," SOS members Lester Lampert, William Porter, and Justin Dunlap were joined onstage by SOS founder, Ralf Widenhorn, along with Oregon Ballet Theater's Artistic Coordinator, Anne Mueller, and five apprentice ballet dancers. Additionally, SOS member, Elliot Mylott, provided much needed programming and technical support. Science Outreach Society in Japan!
Summer, 2012 S.O.S. member Nick Day spent the summer in Japan. These pictures were taken during a demonstration/lecture at Takarazuka-Kita High School. Nick concentrated his talk on colors and used 3 different dyes to help students understand subtractive coloration and predicting good dyes based on absorbance values. The dyes used were Spinach/Chlorophyll, Cherries/Anthrocyanin and Hibiscus/Anthrocyanin. The demo went for 3 hours and was a huge success. The school faculty was very happy and specifically said if S.O.S. ever had the opportunity to come again we were more then welcome. |
